Recently explored the southern part of Chatham county with friend Roger Blanchard who knows a lot of geography and history of this part of North Carolina.  Took a lot of pictures including these of the area along the Deep River once occupied by a fairly large hydroelectric dam. Damming up the Deep River apparently caused all sorts of problems in the Cape Fear Basin. It was in the near precise center of the state of NC, owned by what is now Progress Energy. The story is quite interesting and serves to remind us that even a species as small and ?unimportant? as the Cape Fear Shiner can get something worthwhile accomplished, an important message for us in North Carolina these days.
